IsoBoard has an almost indefinite life-span if installed correctly. IsoBoard Thermal Insulation — extruded polystyrene (XPS)

IsoBoard thermal insulation is a high density, extruded polystyrene rigid insulation board, having a 100% closed cell structure. IsoBoard has been tried and tested internationally since 1970, and manufactured in South Africa since 1995, using a fully automated extrusion process, in accordance with international specifications and standards.

IsoBoard thermal insulation is available in standard lenghts of 8, 6 & 4.8m and halves thereof. Rigional Distribution stores may carry additional standard lenghts. Thicknesses range from 25mm, 30mm, 40mm up to 80mm, with board thiknesses above 50mm made to order. IsoBoard can be ordered with the Isopine surface finish, which looks similar to a tongue and groove pine surface, having grooves at 100mm center's down the length ofthe board, or, bevelled edge with the edge of the board bevelled to achieve a panel finish. IsoBoard is always 600mm in width, and has a tongue and groove edge profile so adjacent boards interlock.

Fire Classification of IsoBoard

IsoBoard is classified as B/B1/2/H&V in tems of SANS 428. This means that although the board is combustible, it poss no flame spread hazard and can be used in any building type in a horizontal or vertical application, with the exception of regulated buildings which require non combustible materials such as armouries. The behaviour of IsoBoard is to shrink away from the heat source, as can be seen from the image. There are no flaming droplets, and no flame spread. The gases released as a product of combustion are less toxic than burning wood.

Thermal Conductivity

The Thermal Conductivity (k value) of new Isoboard is 0.024W/m deg C, and the aged value at 90% Relative Humidity is 0.03 W/m deg C. We term this wet and aged Isoboard k value of 0.03 W/m deg C the 'long term design' value, and this is the value we recommend is used when performing heat flow calculations for building elements using Isoboard Insulation. As Isoboard offers different thickness of product, the thermal resistance, or R value, is calculated by dividing the thickness of the Isoboard selected by the long-term design k-value, to achieve the following table:

Roofs

Nail Up Ceiling Thermal Insulation

Heat gain in residential homes is largely through the roof structure. Insulated ceilings retard heat flow into the living areas in summer, and contain generated heat in winter, providing a comfortable living environment.

Inverted Roof Thermal Insulation

The Inverted Roof Concept, also known as protected membrane or upside down roofing, ensures insulating both the water-proofing membrane and the reinforced concrete slab from extreme thermal stress. This is achieved by placing IsoBoard extruded polystyrene insulation board above, instead of below the waterproofing membrane.

IsoBoard Inverted Roof installation can be installed either as new or retrofit insulation above water-proofing membranes on flat topped buildings or balconies, in retail or office developments, flats, hospitals, airports, hotels and in residential housing.

Over Rafter Thermal Insulation

For the purpose of this installation: a rafter is defined as a simply supported timber beam with its ends prevented from lateral movement and torsional rotation about its longitudinal axis.

One of the most cost-effective insulated ceilings is to install IsoBoard as a roof-liner over trusses, beams and rafters.

The board, in addition to providing high levels of thermal insulation, provides a beautiful backdrop to exposed trusses, and can be painted to match as required.

Over Truss Thermal Insulation

A truss is defined as a built up structural assembly consisting of top and bottom chords, as well as vertical and/or diagonal web elements.

One of the most cost-effective insulated ceilings is to install IsoBoard as a roof-liner over trusses, beams and rafters.

The board, in addition to providing high levels of thermal insulation, provides a beautiful backdrop to exposed trusses, and can be painted to match as required.

Under Soffit Thermal Insulation

Where construction, design and?/?or cost implications prohibit the installation of an inverted roof insulation system, the requirement for insulation is met by fixing IsoBoard to the under soffit surface of the slab as a ceiling.

Used in Residential and Commercial applications to provide insulation where an inverted roof insulation system may not be appropriate.

Over Purlin Thermal Insulation

IsoBoard Insulation installed over purlin under roof sheet. — In South Africa, the bulk of retail and industrial buildings are steel-sheet clad frames, where 70% of the heat gain is through the roof. IsoBoard over purlin insulation is the most cost effective method of achieving thermal efficiency in these buildings

Walls

Cavity Wall Thermal Insulation

Cavity wall insulation will prevent heat transfer and build-up to the inner leaf of sun exposed walls. Moisture within the cavity is prevented from condensing onto and penetrating through the inner leaf when IsoBoard is installed. The insulation restricts heating ingress to temperature controlled and passive cooled environments.

Floors

Surface Bed Thermal Insulation

Loss of heat through floors on concrete surface beds is experienced as a cold underfoot condition, particularly during winter when the supporting soils cool down due to hygroscopic action of water. In order for rooms to be heated or cooled energy efficiently, the floors need to be insulated from the surrounding soil bed to prevent soil bed from being heated.

Retrofit

Retrofit thermal Insulation opportunities for existing structures using IsoBoard

IsoBoard can be used to thermally insulate many existing buildings which require upgrading with respect to comfort levels or energy efficiency. IsoBoard is suitable to be installed as a ceiling, either beneath an existing ceiling, or between trusses or rafters. IsoBoard can be used externally to insulate flat concrete roofs in the inverted roof application, as spandrels or EFIS panels (Exterior Façade Insulation Systems), or to insulate foundation perimeters in the absence of under-slab insulation.

Retail & Commercial

IsoBoard has been used successfully on retail projects of all sizes, including: Gateway - Durban (over-purlin under roof-sheet), Century City - Cape Town (under-soffit with nail-up), The Crescent Center - Umhlanga (Nail Up Ceiling concealed fixing).

The thermal performance of numerous office parks and buildings has been enhanced with IsoBoard laid over the water-proofing and concrete deck, under ballast of pavers or stones. Examples of this application include KPMG offices and the Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria.

With IsoBoard the cost of achieving comfort in retail and commercial applications is reduced due to the reduction in heat gain under hot conditions. In cold conditions, heating energy is conserved.

Industrial

Used in diverse industrial buildings, such as for food processing, liquor and pharmaceuticals, IsoBoard helps control internal temperatures, which extends the shelf-life of the product. Government & Education

Government Use Hospitals in Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal and Limpopo Province have been insulated with IsoBoard. The product has been used at: The Pretoria Academic Hospital, St Anne's in Pietermaritzburg (inverted roof application), St Rita's Meadowlands Clinic in Soweto (over-purlin).

Schools in Botswana have made extensive use of IsoBoard as a ceiling or roof-liner to ensure comfort in this extreme climate. Academic results from children at properly insulated schools in KwaZulu-Natal have shown improvements from 16 - 35%. The MTN campus in Randburg makes use of IsoBoard behind aluminum spandrels.

Residential

Residential Use IsoBoard fitted using the Nail Up method creates aesthetically pleasing insulated ceilings. It is very effective in damp environments such as bathrooms and sculleries.
